Graham Ross Honoured With Prestigious Award
From The Ground Up co-author and Better Homes and Gardens presenter Graham Ross has been awarded the prestigious Veitch Memorial Medal (VMM) in recognition of his contribution to gardening and horticulture in Australia.
The VMM is an international award issued annually by London‟s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to persons of any nationality who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the art, science or practice of horticulture. It is the highest honour that the Society can give to anyone not born in the UK.
HRH Princess Alexandra presented the award to Graham during a ceremony at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in London yesterday.
Graham is the fourth Australian to receive the VMM since its inception in 1870.
“I love gardening, have done since I was a boy, and to be one of the few Australians to be recognised by the world's leading horticulture authority is an enormous honour,” said Graham.
Graham started his career in gardening working at the local nursery aged 11. He later trained and graduated in agronomy, horticulture, park administration, greenkeeping, landscaping and teaching. Graham worked as a seedsman, arborist, landscaper, nurseryman and park superintendent for 30 years and was a teacher of horticulture for 10 years.
Graham has been with Channel Seven for 25 of his 33 years in television – 17 of those with Australia‟s number one lifestyle show, Better Homes and Gardens, on which he has presented close to 700 episodes.
The Ross family's Garden Clinic radio show has broadcast every week on Sydney's 2GB since 1980 and can now be heard on Melbourne's MTR. Their Garden Clinic Club is the biggest garden club in Australia, with membership worldwide, while Ross Garden Tours is the world's largest specialist garden tour operation. Graham has co-authored, with his family, four major garden publications including "The Weekend Gardener‟, "Our World of Gardening‟, "Gardens of the World‟ and "From The Ground Up‟.
